Each performance testequals two essays; so, the two performance tests are worth fouressays. Since the Performance Test is such a large percentage ofthe exam, a strong score can overcompensate for average or weakgrades elsewhere on the exam.Indeed, for the last decade, students averaging “70” on the twoperformance tests could rescue SIX “60” (failing) essay scores, andeasily put them over the pass mark for the Written Section of theexam. (Extra points were then available to compensate for weak MBEscores, if necessary.) Conversely, better-than-average objectivetest-takers learned that a dismal showing on the Performance Testcould destroy otherwise passing scores.
